For your consideration:

While looking though the various data provided each week by Jane Barrett and published by Jack Feeney some intriguing observations come to mind.  Almost every week I hear mention (polite word) of the handicaps and the number of strokes given away to opponents and I always think that as long as the same standard applies to everyone then it’s fair.  The measure of fair is of course subjective and seems somewhat different to those with other viewpoints, just ask any umpire.

For the members of all of the scramble teams, fall upon your knees and give thanks to your “C” players who statistically contribute the highest number of points per head to head match in the league, averaging 8.945 points per match.

Often the “D” player (GROUP AVG 8.494) says “I never contribute anything.” It may surprise you to know you have so far this year provided more points to team standings than the “B” group has (GROUP AVG8.098).  And those occasional overly long putts or chips don’t go unnoticed.

Now, all you “A” players (GROUP AVG 8.725), with your low scores and abilities,  able to drop balls on greens and putt like seeing eye dogs, (boy is that a mixed metaphor), you’re going to have to hitch your shorts and start to score more points to take on the position of leader of the pack.

Now from the statistically aware, I feel a question forcing its way forward,” What’s the statistical basis for this pompous ravings of a “C” player (again the polite word)?  To ease your doubtful minds, I added the team totals by Division (A<B<C<D) and divided by 13, the number of players in each group, and then divided by the number of matches completed (actually I kind of cheated and divided by 91).

I can hear the roar now, that’s not right if that’s what you did the number has to come out at nine per group because the players interplay and the total is always 18 for a match and divided by two will equal nine.  I love scholars, particularly those that have to add up golf score cards.  The variance in points comes about because of “byes” and “never shows” in those instances the points awarded to “the course show us the difference in the divisions.

Think about it, if you miss your match you affect the entire team and allow raging old codgers a chance at somewhat meaningless statistics.

It was fun writing this,
